This year, I am so humbled to be given an incredible opportunity to conduct one of the most historic drum corps of all time as their first female conductor in their 82 year span. As a developing drum major and musician, I never thought I would have the chance to take on such a historic endeavor, let alone with three other immensely talented leaders.
During my first day of freshman band camp, my drum major exemplified the traits of strong leadership. Through his actions and supportive words of mentor ship, I developed a drive to succeed in music that would lead me to auditioning for drum major myself. I served the Edgewater High School Band program for the next three years. Now sharing my passion for conducting as a staff member at Edgewater High School, I’ve discovered even more aspects to the art of teaching. Now I’ve found a nurturing and fertile environment within the Madison Scouts that is allowing me to grow into the future music educator that I dream of becoming.
The Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps have a rich and vibrant history of teaching young musicians and nurturing their ever-growing passion for the arts. Up until the 2020 season, the corps was an all-male group, stemming from a boy scout troupe 82 years ago. In this 83rd year of establishment, the organization has opened its doors to everyone, becoming gender-inclusive. This is a massive step forward in this activity and allows students from every background to pursue their own passion in the arts, just as the Madison Scouts has always intended to do.
From May into early August, I will be touring across the United States and rehearsing with this group daily. This is such a rewarding experience, never mind how costly. The total tuition for this experience is $4,600. This cost includes 4 meals a day, housing fees, instructional fees, uniform fees, medical attention, transportation (bus) fees, and so much more than you could ever imagine.
I am creating this fundraiser in the hopes that everyone who finds interest in the arts and wants to support young people following their dreams and passions will find it in their heart to contribute toward this enormous endeavor ahead of me. I have never been more sure of anything in my life. Since being awarded the honor of leading this group, my entire life has changed for the better. Please also consider donating to my peers who are yearning to march with this group as much as I am, especially my fellow conductors who are making history as well. Thank you in advance for your generosity and for taking the time to hear my story. Thank you for making my dream a reality!
For those of you who don’t know what Drum Corps is, this is a clip of the Madison Scouts from 2013. This show is really what started it all for me. https://youtu.be/8Z1vSwwE63M
