Hi Everyone! We decided to create this space to support Kamaloni and our family because we have received so many requests to do so from our friends and loved ones. Any donation is greatly appreciated and we are beyond grateful! Your thoughts and prayers have been a massive comfort to us during this time!
The only thing we truly ask is that if you know our daughters to please not tell them. While I know this is a controversial decision.. we have made the decision to not tell them unless we absolutely have to. They know Daddy is sick and they know about his vocal cords and that he has lots of doctors appointments and medicine BUT they do not know the big C word. Thank you for respecting this decision.
Kamaloni’s Story…
In the beginning of December 2022, Kamaloni came down with a very minor cold. This resulted in him losing his voice.. which isn’t out of the ordinary. But what wasn’t right was that three weeks later his voice still did not return and he began feeling like he couldn’t catch his breath. This was huge for him because he is very healthy (gets sick maybe once every couple of years), he is extremely active, and an avid runner (runs 2-3 miles every other day).
After working a long grave shift he decided to do a walk-in appointment at his doctors office. They immediately sent him for a CT Scan of his neck and bloodwork. These came back showing a little inflammation in his body.. so within a couple of days he was sent to an ENT Specialist. They did a camera scope procedure of his vocal cords and that’s when we discovered that his left vocal cord is paralyzed. This causes his voice box to not properly close and that’s why he feels winded and like he can’t catch his breath. His doctor believed that he probably had a lingering infection, from his cold back in December, that was affecting the nerve to his vocal cords. So he was sent again for another CT Scan, this time for his chest, and lots of bloodwork. That came back showing a small 1cm nodule (spot) on his lower left lung and more inflammation in his body.
Within a week he was sent to Oahu to do a PET Scan. This scans his whole body and shows all areas of inflammation. The next day we received his results and that little spot in his lung and his lymph nodes in his chest and right clavicle lit up. He was then sent for a biopsy of the lymph node in his right clavicle.
The very next day, on 1/30/23, we received his diagnosis of Stage 3 Adenocarcinoma, Left Lung Lower Lobe Cancer. It is an aggressive form of cancer that likes to spread quickly to the brain so his doctors wanted to start treatment right away.
Because he has no family history of cancer, he is very healthy, and has zero symptoms other than his vocal cords.. Our family and his doctors chose to attack this cancer very aggressively! This means a very high dose of two chemo meds combined every 3 weeks and radiation therapy 5 days a week for 6 weeks straight! After treatments are done he will start immunotherapy. He started his first Chemo treatment on February 9th. Because of how aggressive his treatments are he is unable to work during this time. He is expected to be out of work until August… but he’s hoping to return much sooner! I (Krystle.. his wife) also hasn’t been able to work as much because I am his sole caregiver during his treatments. Between being his caregiver and taking care of our 4 children I’ve had to drastically cut back my working hours. While we do have decent medical, normal living expenses are definitely beginning to be felt much more.
We have never been people to ask for help and even putting this together has been difficult for us to do but here we are… we truly appreciate each and everyone one of you! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!!
