Hi, my name is Kamala Milton. I’m legally blind and hearing impaired — and while I’ve learned to navigate life with limited vision, losing my ability to hear clearly has made daily life more isolating than ever.

About a year ago, my hearing aids began to fail. Now, without them, every conversation sounds like it’s underwater. I struggle to participate in work, family events, and even church. I’m currently on Medicaid, but even with insurance, the updated hearing aids I need are still over $3,000 — and I simply can’t afford them.

We’ve already reached out to every resource available — including Medicaid, SSI, the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, and multiple audiology centers — but the support I need isn’t available through those channels.

As many of you know, I’ve never let my disability stop me from showing up for others. I’ve been blind since the age of three, but I taught myself how to use a computer, how to type 70 words per minute, and recently how to use ChatGPT to build a website advocating for better Medicaid and Medicare services for people with multiple disabilities.

But without hearing aids, I can’t hold Zoom calls, record content, or stay active in the advocacy work I care so deeply about.
