Help Kali Get Her Life and Heart Back

Our 17-year-old daughter, Kali, has always been a bright light—driven, energetic, and passionate about competitive cheer, which she did for many years. Cheer was more than a sport for her; it was a source of joy, discipline, and identity. However, for the past 6 years, that part of her life has slowly faded due to a series of mysterious and debilitating symptoms.

For several years, doctors dismissed her struggles and symptoms as anxiety. We were told again and again that everything seemed “normal,” despite Kali feeling anything but. She was constantly exhausted, overwhelmed at school, lightheaded, and emotionally drained. Eventually, she had to switch back and forth between in person and online schooling just to manage daily life.

It wasn’t until her Apple Watch began alerting us to dangerously low heart rates—sometimes dipping into the 30s while she slept—that we finally had proof something serious was happening. After pushing for more testing, we’re now facing the very real possibility that Kali will need heart surgery, and possibly a pacemaker, to help her heart function properly.

She’s incredibly strong, but no teenager should have to carry this kind of weight. Kali has missed out on so much of a “normal” high school experience, and all she wants is the chance to feel good again—to go to school, to be active, and to maybe even return to the sport she loved so much.

As a family, we’ve faced more than our fair share of medical challenges. Our oldest was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 12, and another is on the autism spectrum. We’ve navigated years of doctor visits, therapies, medications, and hospital stays. While we have decent health insurance, the cumulative financial burden of ongoing medical care for multiple children has taken its toll.
