Help Kaleb be pain free

Our son, Kaleb, has had a challenging journey and we are hopeful that we have found a treatment that may give him some relief.

When Kaleb was nine years old, he became very ill and ended up having emergency brain surgery for a suprasellar arachnoid cyst. Although the cyst couldn’t be removed, the pressure was released. The cyst affected his pituitary gland and kick-started puberty to begin too early, so he ended up having to have injections for a couple of years to regulate that. We also found out that Kaleb has borderline low cortisol levels that need to be boosted whenever he is sick or his body is under stress.

For almost five years, Kaleb resumed normal life for a kid his age (with the exception of contact sports). Then, at fourteen, he had a terrifying seizure. Once again, Kaleb found himself needing to have emergency brain surgery, this time for a chronic brain bleed.

Nine months later, as Kaleb was getting back into physical activities, he began to feel pain and was diagnosed with a herniated disc (L5/S1) and spinal stenosis .

For the last two years, Kaleb has been in daily pain and discomfort. We have consulted with surgeons (neuro and orthopaedic), and due to the procedure and possible risks and complications, it has been recommended that we try everything we can before revisiting this option. So, Kaleb has had a multitude of therapies: physio, massage, chiropractic, osteopath, spinal decompression/laser, and prolo/ozone injection therapy. He is currently still doing Redcord Physio and is working with the Complex Pain team at Children’s Hospital where a psychologist, doctor, and physiotherapist work together to support him. All of Kaleb’s practitioners have been incredibly supportive and each treatment has helped him gain some hope along the way, but he is still in pain.

Kaleb’s sciatic pain is consistent, his hips are locked and the muscles in his lower back and legs are super tight making it hard to walk with his body compensating with a hip sway. Kaleb cannot tolerate sitting for extended periods of time and his school has helped a lot in providing standing desks and mats. At this point, Kaleb chooses to manage his pain with Tyelenol/Advil, ice/heating pads, and a daily Epsom salts bath at night to help him sleep.

Even with all his ups and downs Kaleb maintains an A-B average in school and has a very positive attitude. He is about to turn 17 and is graduating from high school this year. Kaleb is an artist, inventor, scientist, loving brother, and even though in pain still manages to volunteer his time helping kids and the community through Rotary and other clubs on a weekly basis.

Kaleb is very stoic and resilient. It has been heartbreaking watching him deal with his daily pain for the past 2 years and we are eager to help him regain his quality of life.

We are fundraising for a minimally-invasive medical treatment that costs $15,000. We are hoping the treatment will give Kaleb a break from the pain and take some pressure off the nerves.

Please don't hesitate to ask questions and contact us. From the bottom of our hearts... THANK YOU!
