Help Kalahari Bushmen Keep Their Indigenous Wisdom Alive

Donation protected
Hello!

Because of forced confinement and colonization, Bushmen of the ‡Khomani San Tribe in South Africa's Kalahari Desert are no longer able to access their ancestral lands or practice their traditional skills. Once a nomadic culture able to range far for sustenance, the ‡Khomani San are now restricted to a small desert village.

As an avid and curious wildlife tracker and ecologist, I began visiting the Kalahari in 2007. For nearly 20 years, I have had the gift of learning from one of the oldest continual human cultures on the planet. My time with ‡Khomani San has opened a doorway into ancient wisdom that supports animal, plant, soil, water, and human health, so essential in this time of climate change. By walking through this door, I have also experienced the ravages of debilitating poverty resulting from apartheid and discrimination. I am now witness to an endangered culture and people that are on the brink of extinction.

Join me to help my friends and elders maintain their language, access their medicinal plants, and teach their youth traditional ways.

My name is Meghan Walla-Murphy and this summer I will be traveling with colleagues Chanana McGarry , Brock Dolman and Nikki Hill to South Africa's Southern Kalahari to support the ‡Khomani San. Over the years I have been invited back and now we will be going to their village to begin the process of establishing sustainable systems including but not limited to food gardens, water capture, and composting toilets.

Over the years, with my personal funds, I have been able to help the Bushmen return to their ancestral lands and access their sacred sites, which is essential for their culture. In 2022, I was able to take 10 Bushmen elders and youth to their ancient rock art. We are hoping to do the same again this summer.

While it has been my pleasure to financially support the Bushmen and their most basic needs, now it is time to widen the circle of support.

Your donations will go towards:
  • Creating more sustainable and lasting systems such as solar, rainwater and grey water harvesting, and composting toilets
  • Tools such as shovels, hoes, clippers, and loppers
  • Soil amendments
  • Revitalization of their youth Bush School in the nearby Kgalagadi National Transfrontier Park with supplies such as canvas, tents, and tarps
  • Travel expenses for the Bushmen to access their sacred sites

With deep gratitude, I thank you for your help.
