Help Kainoa Thrive Against All Odds

My name is Sabrina Paul. My daughter, Kainoa Paul, was born at just 9 inches and 11 ounces. Despite the chance of no survival, Kainoa has made it to 2 years old. This came at a huge expense. I fought tooth and nail to make sure that her care needs were met. She has never been home. She has now been in 4 different hospitals. We don’t know when she will be able to come home and pray she will. Kainoa has had more surgeries and procedures than I can count. She has gone into cardiac arrest multiple times but always has been able to come back to us. SHE IS A WARRIOR. Kainoa is currently in the MICU at Boston Children’s Hospital. I bounce back and forth multiple times a week from home to Boston. It takes a huge toll on my heart. I have an 11-year-old girl, London; she is an amazing kid! It saddens me that I cannot always be with both girls. London has school and cannot stay in the hospital. When London visits Kainoa on the weekends, we have to stay in hotels, use Ubers, and eat. It’s a great expense. I have exhausted all of my FMLA and am unable to work because I am just one single mom with two girls who need me, so I go back and forth between cities to be with each girl. Kainoa has complex medical needs. She is diagnosed with BPD, which is baby lung disease; she is on a ventilator; she has bone disease of prematurity, which has resulted in broken ribs, a broken femur, and spinal fractures. She has white matter loss in her brain and is diagnosed with PVL, which usually ends up in a cerebral palsy diagnosis. Despite all odds, Kainoa can smile and laugh and feel love. Once we were told that she would be 99% an empty shell, and 1% would be to God. God’s 1% is clearly a stronger force. She has made tremendous strides but is also still medically complex. She is currently 23 lbs. She is a happy girl; she loves music, Disney, making friends, and affection. We have hope that Kainoa will be able to walk and talk. We were told she was probably going to be quadriplegic. We now know that she is vocal and all of her limbs work. She will need extensive physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. She is the bravest and strongest human that I have ever met. Please help us give her every chance to live as much of a normal life as possible. She has fought so hard to be here. We pray that she can overcome all the challenges ahead.
