On Sunday, August 3rd, our lives changed in an instant. While walking our dogs, a neighbor’s dog broke free and attacked. In the chaos, a bystander—who wasn’t the owner of any dog involved—stabbed our beloved Kai in the neck with an 18-inch knife. We rushed him to the hospital, terrified and desperate. Kai lost a tremendous amount of blood and nearly died. The doctors told us that if he wasn’t such a big, thick-skinned dog, he wouldn’t have survived. He’s only three years old, and he’s always been our gentle giant.
Kai is now recovering at home, but his journey is far from over. He has a stint in his neck that is still bleeding, and he faces more operations and follow-up appointments. The emotional toll on our family has been immense. We’ve had to rearrange our lives, ask family for help with our other dogs, and focus all our energy on Kai’s recovery. The trauma of witnessing the attack and the aftermath has left us shaken, and the financial strain is overwhelming. We’ve used everything we had to cover the emergency surgery, but the costs for ongoing care, medications, and future appointments are unknown.
Kai is more than just a pet—he’s a sweet, well-mannered, all-white dog who loves the outdoors, especially hiking, swimming in rivers, and playing in the snow. He’s happiest rolling in the dirt or getting head scratches and belly rubs. We’re asking for help to give Kai the best chance at a full recovery. Any support will go directly toward his medical care and help us bring our happy, loving boy back to health.
