Help Kai Get Home: My Trip Turned Nightmare

Hi, my name is DanDré Jo’elle Henry (Kai’jin Mulan AO), and I’m reaching out during one of the most challenging moments of my life.

This past Saturday, December 28th, I traveled to Washington, D.C., to attend a Kiki ball—a space that has always brought me joy, creativity, and community. What was supposed to be a celebratory night turned into a nightmare when, during a brief moment of putting my bag down to compete, someone stole my fanny pack.

Inside that fanny pack was everything I need to function, travel, and survive:

• My passport (as a Canadian citizen, this is my only way to get home),

• All my identification and cards,

• Sentimental jewelry,

• My money (approximately $2,000 USD),

• Bose earbuds ($400), and

• The key to my Airbnb, which resulted in a $300 USD fine.

I am devastated, stranded far from home, and struggling to piece my life back together after this loss.

*Why I Need Your Help*

I’ve reported the theft to the police, contacted the Canadian embassy, and begun the long and overwhelming process of replacing my stolen items. However, without funds, I cannot replace my passport, expedite its processing, or book a plane ticket back to Canada. I am currently staying with a friend in Virginia, but I have no financial stability and no money left to my name.

1. Replace my stolen passport and expedite the process, which costs over $400 USD.

2. Book a plane ticket home to Canada, which will cost around $506 USD for a last-minute flight.

3. Cover my rent for January 1st ($1,000 CAD), as this setback has left me at serious risk of missing payments and facing further financial hardship.

4. Replace critical stolen items, such as chargers and headphones, if possible.

*Why This Matters*

This experience has left me feeling vulnerable and shaken. I’ve always been someone who gives to my community, but now, I find myself needing to ask for help. As a queer person of color, spaces like the Kiki ballroom scene are meant to be places of love and safety, yet this incident has forced me to navigate the harsh reality of losing everything in an unfamiliar place.
