Kai’s prosthetic leg fundraiser

Donation protected

Hello everyone, my name is Steven and I am fundraising for my very brave nephew Kai who has a rare bone cancer.

At the end of January 2021 Kai was diagnosedwith a rare bone cancer in his left leg called Osteosarcoma.  Kai was an otherwise fit and healthy 19 year old from South Shields, North east England until he had two minor injuries to his
left leg, the pain from (what he thought was from the injuries) persisted throughout the UK lockdown until he could no longer stand the pain in his leg.

He was quickly assessed and was given X-rays and scans at our local hospital, they identified something was wrong and referred him for an urgent appointment at the Freeman hospital. I accompanied Kai to his first appointment knowing something was serious when he had an urgent follow up. It was at this appointment that Kai found out that he had a rare bone cancer tumour at the top of his left leg below the knee. Despite the devastating news he took the news very bravely, very courageously and with a positive outlook. We come from a close family with a wide circle of friends in our town so we knew we had/have everyone’s support and encouragement. We all were very obviously devestated, worried, fearful of what the future held for Kai. However we quickly rallied around each other to put on a show of strength for Kai. Needless to say it has brought the family much closer together.

What happened next....

The specialist team consisting of specialist nurses, surgeons and oncologists put forward a plan which they feel will cure kai of his cancer,  however; that plan included 10 initial weeks of intensive chemotherapy, followed swiftly by amputation of his left leg and thirdly - 20 weeks of chemotherapy post amputation. Various scans and tests showed the cancer had not spread beyond his leg- thankfully.

Kai has now completed his first 10 weeks of chemotherapy and has his surgery to amputate his leg slightly above the knee on may 11th 2021.. His 20th birthday.

I am fundraising for a revolutionary procedure under a Swedish surgeon who’s father pioneered Osseointergration... a surgical technique whereby a titanium implant is implanted into the residual limb, and an abutment in the bottom of the limb allows the patient to quickly and effortlessly attach an ultra modern prosthetic leg. Not only does this save the patient time each day, it allows the user to feel different surfaces because it is implanted directly into the skeleton, it allows the user much greater mobility and significantly greater quality of life.

Moreover; pain and ulcerations are reduced which would also be a concern with a standard socket prosthetic limb. The procedure will need to be funded privately at exceptional cost as it is not available under the NHS.

Kai is a young man, who is undergoing life saving and life changing treatment and surgery. He wants the best possible outcome at the end of this journey, we all want that for him, which is why I ask you to donate whatever you can afford to help him get the money needed to have this revolutionary, life changing surgery when he is fit and able after his surgery and chemotherapy.

Thank you all so much for your support, it means the difference between having a standard run of the mill socket prosthetic with all of the issues that tie in with that.... or a revolutionary medical intervention where his mobility and quality of life will

Be substantially improved.
