About us

 

I'm Benjamin, and I share a home with Kage. Kage is a rescue greyhound, who has had a bit of a tough life. From being used for sport to a whole bunch of operations and trouble with his feet to the process of finding a forever home.

 

 

Over the past year and a bit, I've been able to give him a taste of the good life. He's gone from a shy, reactive dog to a quiet, loving, doofus who loves saying hello to new friends, both four-legged and two.

 

He's changed my life. He's helped me get through a really tough few years (both on a global level as we all get through these 'unprecedented times', and also on a personal level as I receive treatment for my mental health).

 

 

 

The Big C

 

Late last week, I found out he has bone cancer (osteosarcoma). This is a super nasty, super-aggressive form of cancer that is far too common in dogs and is terminal. Without treatment, he would likely be in intense pain and need to be put to sleep within a matter of weeks.

 

 

There are some factors on our side: we caught it early. That means he's not in intense pain right now. That means if we act quickly, we can remove the problem before it spreads further throughout his body. And he's also young, so he has good chances for surviving treatment.

 

Treatment

 

In consultation with his fantastic vet, Dr Bec Goode of the Port Philip Animal Hospital, we've decided to go for something that seems a little scary but will give Kage the best chance of making it to his next 'got you' day: amputation of his rear leg followed by chemo.

 

It's hard surgery and requires a lot of post-op support. Lucky his surgeon is really experienced in doing this surgery - a sad reflection of just how common this cancer is. I've heard from so many folk who have had dogs go through this that they adjust so amazingly well to the loss of the limb. I would not proceed if I thought this drastic step would compromise his quality of life.

 

It is, as you might expect, an expensive surgery. My savings have taken a hit over the past few years (an unexpected move, my treatment costs and other money black holes). Simply put, I cannot fully afford his treatment right now. And each day we wait, the cancer gains a stronger foothold.

 

 

This cancer cannot be cured. Eventually, he’ll lose the fight. But this treatment will give him time. At the worst, a few more months. At best, maybe a year or two. He's only just begun to live the life he deserves. Please help me give him as much time as we can.

I grew up in a working-class family with a difficult relationship to money. Even today, talking about money is difficult. Asking for help does not come easy. But I love Kage so much and know that he deserves to have the best chances to enjoy life longer. So I swallow my pride and ask you for help.
