Hello, we are the Strawder family. This is Kae'lynn's story. She is a very bright, bubbly little girl until around February 1st. Kae'lynn was running a fever and vomiting, so her father and I took her to the doctor. They tested her for the flu, COVID, and strep; they all came back negative. The doctor said it was a viral bug, so they sent us home and said she could return to school the following day. She was unable to return the following day because she was still vomiting every time she would consume anything to eat or drink.
After about 3 days, she was still having all the same symptoms except for the fever. So we took her back to the doctor. They retested her for the flu, COVID, and strep, and they also came back negative. The doctor said her stomach felt a little hard, so they prescribed some Miralax. We followed the regimen all through the weekend. She did not have a bowel movement; she was still unable to keep anything down, and at this point, we were 9 days into her not being able to keep anything down.
Monday morning, I got a call from the doctor saying they sent the culture off to the lab, and it came back positive for strep. The doctor prescribed amoxicillin. We tried to start the antibiotic on that day, but she was unable to keep anything down. So we took her to the emergency room, where she was then admitted for 9 days. They did an EKG where her heart rate was low. She was dehydrated and still could not have a bowel movement. They did an ultrasound that came back fine. They did an endoscopy on her that came back fine as well. They then diagnosed her with gastroparesis. It was explained to me that it means your bowels are in hibernation mode, and this is why she was not using the bathroom.
At this point, we're around day 17 of being sick. The doctors are still unable to tell us what the cause of her illness is because they redacted the diagnosis for gastroparesis disorder since she didn't meet all the symptoms. So the pediatric team decided to put Kae'lynn on a feeding tube because she was starting to lose weight, and she was already tiny. The doctors are still not able to give us a diagnosis as to what is wrong, and we are 31 days into this illness with no answers. We are trying to raise funds to relocate Kae'lynn to Cincinnati Children's Hospital to see if they can help us get answers for her. Kae'lynn has already missed a month of school, and we are ready to have some answers so that our baby girl can go back to being happy, healthy, and bubbly again. If there is anyone willing to donate to help us get answers for our baby girl, we would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much in advance, and have a blessed and wonderful day.
