Two Baby Sisters, One Medicine Worth Crores. You Can Save Their Lives

am Rekha, the mother of two beautiful baby girls, Kaashvi, who is 2.8 years old, and Arohvi, who is only 2 months old. They are the biggest blessing of my life, and giving birth to them has been my greatest achievement. They are my world, my everything.

But now my world has shattered.

Kaashvi and Arohvi have been diagnosed with a rare, progressive, and life-threatening genetic disorder—spinal muscular atrophy. The disease threatens to steal their lives, and only a one-time gene therapy called Zolgensma can save them.

SMA is a disease that, over time, attacks the muscles, making it difficult for the child to perform any movement. As it progresses, it even makes breathing and swallowing difficult, almost impossible. It needs early detection and treatment, without which my daughters’ lives are in danger. SMA is of two types

Kaashvi, my elder daughter, is diagnosed with SMA Type 2, which could lead to significant disability and loss of motor function over time.

Arohvi, my younger daughter, is diagnosed with SMA Type 1, which is more severe and could be fatal if untreated in early infancy.

To save the lives of my babies, they will need Zolgensma, which can halt the progression of SMA and give them a chance at life. Tragically, this life-saving drug costs Rs. 16 crores per child.

As parents, nothing matters to us more than the lives of our children. Although we are a middle-class family, we are ready to do whatever it takes, sacrifice all we have to save their lives. Yet, even after doing all we can, this amount eludes us, and we are nowhere close to this amount. We’ve been in constant touch with Novartis, the manufacturer of Zolgensma, who, understanding our plight, has allowed us to have an EMI plan to pay for the drug. Accordingly, we need to immediately pay Rs. 9 Crores for each of our daughters, and the rest in phases.

Words cannot describe the pain and mental turmoil we’ve been undergoing to arrange for this fund. We’ve been reaching out to organizations, friends, strangers, and anyone willing to listen, but this is an unimaginably large sum of money to arrange for in such a short time.
