Hello!
All of us at Jwala have had the privilege of bearing witness to the creation of what I can only describe as the next version of a great American classic.
‘Eva’s Eye’ is a noir family drama that centers on Eva, a working mother who has a fraught relationship with her family and community. Her husband isn’t on her team, her teenage son seems to be on the verge of falling into the red-pill, conservative side of the internet, and the people in her town always think she isn’t doing enough. She has dreams of her own. Fears of her own. And nobody to share them with.
This play has everything a great story does - love, betrayal, loss - but above all, it asks the question we should all be asking ourselves : what do we owe to each other?
I’m Niranjani, the founder and artistic director of Jwala Productions. As a playwright, actor and producer, I’ve made it my mission to uplift not only South Asian stories from the diaspora and beyond, but also to focus intensely on collaborations between artists of color. I’m lucky enough to say that I run this company with my two close friends, Shreya Ambatti and Isha Lal - but we know that our wider community is what will help us bring these stories to life. We would be thrilled to have you be a part of this community we’re building.
Since our launch in February, we have produced a reading at East Village Basement, as well as a full production of my one-act ‘Seeking Fair and Lovely : Rishtas and Rasas’ at The Tank in Midtown. It’s only been 6 months, but we have grown exponentially, and are making strides towards our next big project : a full reading and production of Alex Holloman’s ‘Eva’s Eye.’
We have a reading of the play going up in November, but we are fundraising all along the way. Our goal is to make the production of this play as fantastic as it reads on the page - which is exactly what it deserves.
I sincerely hope you will consider supporting our journey of turning our dream of this show into a reality. We have a passionate, dedicated team of young artists trying to turn the tide of the American canon. We have stories to tell, but we can’t do it without the help of our entire community. That includes you.
