On August 8, 2020 Justin's Dad took him to Stony Brook University Hospital. His symptoms appeared to be Chrohns related. However lab results showed a more serious problem. Justin's liver was failing him. A difficult diagnosis to hear by itself, but even more so as Justin has never had a drink in his life.
It was imperative that Justin be transferred to a facility that could offer him the level of care required. Within days he was brought to the Transplant ICU at the
Mt. Sinia Hospital in Manhattan. Justin's body was in serious distress, he had to be put on a ventilator and in a medically induced coma.
He was diagnosed with Wilson's disease, a rare genetic disorder. With his liver and lungs compromised and the medications needed to maintain him, Justin's kidneys began to shut down. He now requires dialysis.
Justin's liver is not healthy but currently he is not in need of a transplant.
After three weeks of full ventilator support, his sedation was lessened and he woke up. Justin was able to be moved to a respiratory care unit. Since then he has been on the strenuous task of being weaned from the vent. He will require extensive rehabilitation after what will be a lengthy hospital stay.
Justin is a kind, caring and thoughtful person. At age 32 he has been struggling with numerous health issues for half of his life. He is now in the depth of his biggest battle yet.
Thank you for helping Justin and his parents with the expenses incurred during this difficult journey.
