Help Justin Hike 5000km!

Donation protected
On the 30th of April I will stand on the border of Mexico, face north, and shudder in anticipation at what I am about to try and achieve. Ahead of me lies 5,000km of some of the toughest terrain the USA has to offer.

Over the course of the next five months I will attempt to hike from Mexico to Canada along the Continental Divide Trail. The trail will be grueling as it traverses the entire length of the formidable American Rocky Mountains! Including over 839,000ft of elevation change (255km vertical up and down), or the equivalent of climbing Mt Everest 14.5 times from sea level. Oh yeah, and bears, did I neglect to mention im rather scared of bears?

If I have time and my legs are still good, I will attempt the extra 500km from the Canadian border on the Great Divide Trail to Banff, in Alberta. This is highly dependant on early snowfall not occuring in September.

My overall goal is to achieve the Triple Crown of Hiking , which involves walking 12,700km and completing three of the longest trails in the world. This is an accolade only 290 people have ever achieved. In comparison, 536 people have been to space.

The three trails are the Pacific Crest Trail,  the Continental Divide Trail, and the Appalachian Trail.

But I need your help. Last summer I successfully hiked the 4,300km Pacific Crest Trail, which drained my bank account completely. Over the winter, I have worked hard to save enough money to undertake another major trail, at times two jobs. Unfortunately, I've failed to save enough due to gear replacement, weddings, bills, and my student loan.  So I'm asking you to please help me achieve one of my life goals. And keep me safe from the bears.

The money raised will be spent on:

Getting to the trail. I am flying from Calgary to Pheonix on the 29th of April and driving to the Mexican border in New Mexico. Replacing gear as it wears out. I will go through at least five pairs of shoes on the trail. Other gear will need to be replaced as it wears out, as five months of constant use will degrade almost everything. My shoes and socks bill alone could amount to $800.

Resupply. I will need to leave the trail every 5-10 days. I will hitchhike into a town, fill my pack with supplies, fuel, and recharge the body and batteries. On last years trail I  consumed between 3,500-5,000 calories a day  to maintain my bodies needs, and still lost 35 lbs. Nutritious hiking food of course isn't cheap. Last year, I learned it costs around $1,000 a month to cover these expenses.

Other expenses include: postage of gear and food to resupply points, bear protection (bear spray, bear proof food bag), five months rescue and medical insurance ($750), ice and snow gear, rescue beacon, expenses in towns (laundry, showers, food etc) and maybe the occasional bed in a motel to get out of my tent for a night. I also need to pay the association to drive out into the desert and leave water caches for me.

Your donation will be greatly appreciated and I will thank you enthusiastically! Every donation over $15 will receive a limited edition "I saved Justin from a Bear" pin.

In addition to a pin, if you donate a larger amount I will carry you proudly along the trail with me!

$25
Sponsor a pair of socks! And I will literally think of you every time I change them!

$50
Sponsor my Bear Mace. Because again I’m scared of bears. I will write your name on the canister and believe whole heartedly that you are protecting me.

$75
Shout me a Spotify subscription so I have some epic tunes to hike to! In addition, you have the privilege of building me a playlist that will get me up mountains! I will listen to it regardless of how bad your music choices are, if its really bad it’ll keep the bears away, right?

$100
Shoes. Literally help support me along the trail, every step. I will go through 5-6 pairs of shoes over the trail, roughly one pair every 800km.

$150
Sponsor a resupply! I will need to resupply every 5-10 days and the amount of food required is huge, up to 5,000 calories a day! So when I hit town I will treat myself to huge amounts of food in your honour! Refill my pack of course and I will shout out to you on social media about it!

$250
Sponsor my tent! I will write your name on my tent in waterproof ink to help defend against the bears at night. Because bears are scared of stuff like that.

$350
Sponsor my satellite beacon. Know that if any thing goes wrong the chance of me being rescued goes up significantly because of you. You can also send me a post-it sized note to put in the beacon with encouraging words on it. I will turn to it in times of emergency.

$500
I will have your name professionally stitched into my pack in bright yellow thread. I will literally hate and love you because the stitching will actually add weight, but everyone along the way will know who you are and I will carry you with pride.

$1000
Sponsor my flight home for my mum’s 60th birthday!!! It is the one deadline on completing the trail I have to meet! I will also sew your name on my pack to keep the bears away. (Sorry mum for pointing out that you're turning 60).

$2,500
I will fly anywhere in North America or New Zealand to personally cook you and your dinner companions a fantastic three course meal. I will regale you with tales of hardships and beauty from the trail! I will of course carry your name proudly on my pack.
