Help Julieta Apfelbaum, a Surfside condo survivor
Hi, My name is Claudia Waitman, I live in Wellington Florida. I am starting this fundraiser to help support my friend's mom.
On June 24, a condo partially collapsed in Surfside, Florida, leaving dozens of residents unaccounted for. My dear friend’s mom, Julieta Apfelbaum lived in Unit # 706 on the side of the building that is still standing. She was awakened by loud noises in the middle of the night. Not knowing what to do and in the midst of the confusion, she quickly called my friends who advised her to grab her passport and medications and head to the balcony. She was luckily among the first ones to be rescued with the firefighters’ ladder.
Julieta is 78 years old. She moved to Miami over 25 years ago to be close to her daughter and grandchildren. She left her life in her apartment and must now start from scratch. While the gratitude for her making it out alive is immense, the realization that she has lost many of her lifelong friends and neighbors as well as everything she owned is no less vast.
We are heartbroken for all the families affected and appreciate any donation you can make to help Julieta in this transition. All donations to this fund will be used to help her rent a place to live and regain some sort of normalcy while she adjusts to her new life.

La mamá de mi querida amiga, Julieta Apfelbaum, vivía en el departamento #706 en la torre del edificio que aún está en pie. Se despertó por los ruidos fuertes en medio de la noche. Sin saber qué hacer y en medio de la confusión, rápidamente llamó a mis amigos quienes le aconsejaron que tomara su pasaporte y medicamentos y se dirigiera al balcón. Afortunadamente, fue una de las primeras en ser rescatadas con la escalera de bomberos
Julieta tiene 78 años. Se mudó a Miami hace más de 25 años para estar cerca de su hija y sus nietos. Dejó su vida en su departamento y ahora debe empezar de cero. Si bien la gratitud de haber salido con vida es inmensa, la realidad de saber que ha perdido a muchos de sus amigos y vecinos de toda la vida, así como todo lo que poseía, no es menos vasta.
Estamos desconsolados por todas las familias afectadas y agradecemos cualquier donación que puedan hacer para ayudar a Julieta en esta transición.
