We are reaching out as a family during this unimaginable time to make a plan for what the future holds.
On Thursday, May 20th my Dad was cooking, he went into his bedroom and told my mom that it would be 10 more minutes. My Dad, Gary, returned to the kitchen and suffered a massive heart attack over the stove, which burnt him badly. My mom found him in the kitchen unresponsive. She and my younger siblings performed CPR which returned his pulse, then emergency responders arrived to take him to St. Mary's ER. After 12 hours at St. Mary's, he was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
At Arrowhead, specialists identified that the treatment of his burns could lead to a chance of survival. Thursday Gary was surrounded by family who prayed for him during the fight for his life, but his body kept shutting down. Friday afternoon my dad's condition was communicated as a point of no return. On Friday, May 21st our family was given the chance to share memories with him and to say our final goodbyes. My dad passed away at 10:14 pm on Thursday, May 21st.
Over the past five years, my dad had been battling cancer and for a short period of time, he was in remission. However, shortly after my family's move to Apple Valley, CA, his cancer returned with a terminal diagnosis. After two different chemotherapies and many horrific months, it was not until May 6th of this year that hope of remission or even defeating cancer was returned to Gary -- Gary's most recent immunotherapy treatments were working and led his doctors to believe remission was a possibility again.
My dad had hope again. My family had hope again. Gary's enthusiasm for life had returned. With this great news, my dad planned quality family time. He made plans for roller skating, camping, and home improvement projects.
We are lost on where to go from here, but we feel that this is a start.
We ask for any help that you can give, whether that takes the form of donation or sharing this link. After being injured last May, my mom's ability to work declined and her income followed. Then in November her injury worsened and prevented her from working altogether, without compensation.
And now, this. He was taken from us too soon and our lives have been shattered.
Any contributions will help support us with bills, food, and funeral costs. Thank you for your help.
