Hello everyone, as some of you may know back in January, I applied and started the process of becoming a living liver organ donor. There were many delays and setbacks with covid but now the process is steadily moving forward. I began rigorous testing in June, and this week I completed the lasts of my tests/consults and have been given the go ahead!

I made the choice to donate anonymously to a child. I will be donating the left lobe of my liver.

Since my early teen years I always knew I wanted to be a donor. I signed up to be on the bone marrow registry at 17 and started donating blood at 18. Five years ago I had applied to be a living kidney donor but needed to be 25 for an anonymous donation in BC. I had applied again last year as a directed donation to a friend of a friend’s child that I didn’t know but l got the same response (to wait until I was 25). I had applied to donate my kidney or liver through Toronto and was accepted into both programs. I made the decision to donate my liver. 

British Columbia stopped doing live liver donations 7 years ago so I will need to travel to Toronto Ontario for my surgery and possible quarantine for up to 2 weeks prior. I created a go fund me page to help with costs associated with my transplant, travel, accommodation and lost wages from work. I had to travel to Toronto for my assessments, upcoming surgery and my follow up appointments. My family will also be taking time off work to help support me in my recovery. Since I am a nurse in emergency I expect to be away from work for 8 weeks (but could potentially be longer depending on my healing).
