My name is Juan, and my brother is now at an ICE detention center after having been detained; I’m raising money for him, his legal proceedings, as well for the well-being and welfare of his family.
This is my brother Gerson Cabrera, and is my older brother.
Yesterday, like many across the country,
he was detained and is in detention awaiting on an uncertain future.
They did not give him the human right to say goodbye to his wife, who was with him at the time, and who JUST recently became a permanent resident, and through whom he would legalize his migratory status.
He did not have the opportunity to say goodbye to his kids-Junior, Kathy, Nicole and his youngest… Gerson (who carries his father’s name)-all four who are American citizens, and one who is about to finish high school this year, but now his father won’t be there to commemorate a monumental triumph.
My brother and I both came here in 2000, and the reason for my being here is not jus so I could meet my mom for the first time after having come to the United States seeking a better future for us back home, but to protect me along the way, after a failed first attempt, in which the person who would have been in charge to bring me over did not report to meet me, and rather stole the hard- working money of both of my parents.
Since the very beginning, him and I have sought ways to attain a much more proper, safer, and successful future, given both of respective ways and in an unknown country that has since then become our home: him as an automotive mechanic, and I as a student working my way up in the educational in an academic system that let me to become a registered nurse.
He is the best brother one can ask for, and the friend one only hope to have.
The best neighbor.
He’s selfless, devoted, caring, and sees the best in every single person he come across.
In the beginning, we both benefited from a protection called TPS, but only I was able to continue benefiting from such program, and not him, leaving him vulnerable to a system that would otherwise make him feel unwanted or unwelcome, but taking risks to provide for his family.
He was only able to benefit from it on one or two occasions, leaving him completely vulnerable to legal issues, unabling him to find legal employment, obtaining a driver’s license and simply barred from deserving opportunities.
Such a major disadvantage has taken an insignificant tall on his life and has affected his family as well: his wife, and four kids – my nieces and nephews.
Last night, he slept in a cell.
He slept in fear, and filled with unimaginable worries.
He felt defenseless.
And we couldn’t be there for him.
He’s in a system we cannot comprehend.
He needs us, and his family, too.
He won’t be able to now say good morning. No good night to his family. He is at the mercy of those around him and those who are taking control over his life now.
I plead to you and those around you to please keep him in your prayers, thoughts, and help me help him and his family navigate these difficult times.
If it’s within your means to help us financially, as we overcome this unthinkable obstacle, please we ask you kindly to do so.
These are difficult times we are living in and now more than before, we need to come together as one and unite our love for those who need it most, and those in need.
My brother would definitely use any help, and so does his family.
We are all hurting. But our love and strength is going to help us face this unprecedented obstacle.
This will be part of the past- with your collaborative efforts and ours, we will be victorious!!
God will help us.
