Our dear friend and shining light Juan Correa was recently diagnosed with cancer, and is currently undergoing treatment. At under 30 years old and as a strong man in both body and spirit, we know he can make a full recovery with the right treatment and care. However, prior to being hospitalized, Juan had been working 7 days a week in order to make ends meet and help his family, meaning despite his incredibly hard work he has very little money to pay for the very expensive cancer treatments he requires. Donations will go to covering treatment costs and help him in his everyday life, as his current condition will limit how much he is able to work for the foreseeable future. While cancer is always a serious, frightening, and urgent diagnosis, with invaluable financial and emotional support from his family, friends, and beyond, we know Juan will overcome it.
About Juan:
Juan has, and continues to have, a profoundly positive, beautiful impact on my life. We met when I was 13 and he was 16, and almost instantly he became like a big brother to me. During my difficult teenage years, he was not only a best friend and sounding board for my frustrations but a guiding force who showed me the best, right path in any and all situations. When I came to an especially difficult period in my life, he sheltered me for months without charging me a dime, giving me not only a home but a chosen family and sense of peace I had long looked for. To this day, he remains one of the brightest lights anyone could ever meet. Juan is equal parts youthful wonder, mature responsibility, boundless curiosity, sagacious wisdom, selfless generosity, and endless fun. He will give you the shirt off his back before he engages in an hours-long conversation that can range from the meaning and nature of life to pressing social issues - and everything in between, all punctuated with laughter. Juan is a beaming, unselfconscious smile in human form that betters the life of anyone lucky enough to know him.
Juan has also supported not just himself but his family since the time we met - something he continues to do. For more than a decade he was shouldered burdens that most would not be willing to undertake, let alone be prepared for, years prior to becoming a legal adult. His generosity extends to his friends, family, and anyone in need - which means he frequently goes without so that others are happy. Even when he does focus on himself and his own life, longstanding challenges inherent to supporting oneself since a very young age come into play. Despite working seven days a week, essentially every week, for many years, he has been unable to build a significant savings. Now, with mounting medical costs levied by a less-than-stellar healthcare system, he needs the financial assistance he has never had - or asked for - now more than ever. Beyond paying for medical necessities, donations can be used to make it so that he will not have to work every day to support himself - as he has always done without complaint - and can rest his body to better maximize treatment. Please, donate whatever you can to a man who more than deserves it in every way imaginable.
