Jyla's Studio of Dance (JSD) is the brainchild of HBCU-Howard alum Alethea Price. A native Washingtonian, Price discovered her love of the arts at a young age and began JSD twelve years ago to pass that admiration on to the DMV's talented youth.
Offering a wide range of classes, including ballet, jazz, modern, pointe, tap, musical theatre and hip-hop, JSD exposes its students from the most vulnerable parts of the city to a world only depicted in books or television scripts.
"My life's work is to secure a better future for the next generation," said Price. The skills acquired through the class structure at JSD are not just to develop artists but are influential in transitioning them into thriving successful adults."
Whether that's turning pro as a Washington Wizard's dancer or entering the corporate sector as a clinical therapist, JSD students are impacting the world one step at a time. "The discipline I gained from JSD played an integral role in the working professional I became, said Ciara Fagins, clinical therapist," JSD alum.
Showcasing life outside of the DMV corridor, Price extends JSD's core curriculum to include Broadway show field trips, annual young girls' retreat, and rites of passage initiatives.
Having to adapt to a new life structure due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, JSD has faced unforeseen challenges. "Like many others across the world, I'm facing financial hardships to keep the doors open," said Price. "However, now more than ever, organizations such as JSD are vital to the community's sustainability. JSD is not just a place to learn dance; it is home to many of DMV's brightest."
Currently, JSD has a goal to convert their dance space into a virtual theatre by February 9, 2021, which includes, videography, editing, light technicians and costumes. This years black history dance program "The Gift to Re- (G)ift" will assist dancers from ages 3- 16 in exercising what they've learned thus far from some of the most amazing dance trainers in the Washington, D.C. area. No small amount goes unnoticed. We are grateful for any monetary amount that is contributed in supporting our dance program. . .
