The housing crisis has hit home—my home. Even though I paid my rent faithfully, every month on time for 7 years, often two weeks in advance, my landlord raised the rent twice in two years. My landlord tried to claim I moved out just to raise the rent even more. I fought for months to get my rent records to show I lived there continuously since 2018, but he refused When I refused to pay the $200/month increase because he hadn't done anything to justify it, he took me to court.
I won on counterclaims of unpaid interest on last month's rent for five years and poor conditions--the moldy water stains in the bathroom. But things got ugly when he couldn't get possession.
In December my landlord began harassing and intimidating me—turning off my heat then drilling out my deadbolt one winter day when I was out. Then he refused to fix it until the next day, leaving me locked out.
I kept my apartment warm with space heaters, but he filed a restraining order against me for that. I missed the court date because of a medical screening. After he got the TRO, he finally turned the heat back on.
I am 70 years old next week and partially blind. I gave up and moved out. He kept escalating harassment and I feared for my health and safety.
I have been paying to stay in hotels ever since. My savings are running out, and I am doing everything I can to avoid going into a shelter.
What I'm asking for sounds like a lot, but I know it won't happen all at once. Hotels cost up to $100/night. The total amount will cover me until warmer weather, or I get an apartment--whichever comes first
Whatever you give will go directly to keeping a roof over my head while I search for a safe, affordable place to live. I don’t know how to thank people who are kind enough to help, but I will pray for you every night that your generosity will be returned to you 100-fold.
I will show you how your donations were spent every week. And if I get a permanent place to live, you will be the first to know!
