Help Josie Recover from a Vicious Dog Attack

BOLO!!!!

Verona Island, just near the mouth to go over the big bridge, has two very aggressive dogs. One white Rottweiler and one black bull mastiff. Take caution with pets, children, or vulnerable/at-risk adults.

This morning, I was taking my two young dogs into my yard for their morning business. I was less than 5 feet away from the backside of my home when I heard some commotion in the brush behind me. As I turned towards the commotion, the two large dogs came barreling through the bushes towards myself and my pups. My two girls booked it for the front side of my house to the entrance of my home. By the time the big dogs met up with myself and my dogs, we were at my doorstep. My littlest dog was able to be agile and get ahead of us through the chaos and up onto the top of the doorstep. That’s when the white dog grabbed a hold of my little one while the black dog bit the hind end of my bigger dog. I was able to start kicking the white dog in the throat and pull my little one out of its mouth. I was able to get my door open and toss my little dog in the house. When I turned my head to check on my next dog while closing the door, I saw the white dog turning and now grabbing the front side of my dog that was still outside. So the black dog had one end of her, and now the white dog had the other end of her; they were dragging her off the doorstep and had her pinned to the ground while each one pulled at each end of her. On my porch, I had a long snow scraper, which I grabbed and started smacking them while shouting at them. Eventually, I was able to get her free and into my home. My littlest 6-pound baby does not have any serious wounds, just bruising and very shaken. My 13-pound girl is very bruised, battered, and has broken bones. She will need an amputation at the very least at this point. As time goes by, we will know if she needs even more treatment than that. She has a head contusion, lots of bruises around her stomach and rib cage. Her leg is shattered, which will need amputation.

I did make a call to the Hancock County sheriffs, Verona Island ACO Troy, Verona Island selectman, and Maine animal welfare was also involved. Bucksport ACO was so kind to meet me at the Bucksport animal shelter and guide me through the steps and connect me to all these people as I did not know what to do or where to turn.

Unfortunately, when Troy and the selectman talked to my neighbors about what had happened and presented them with the undeniable evidence of the damages, the neighbors declined to pay for my dog care. They are stating I have no evidence that it was their dog. Unfortunately, I do not have any outdoor cameras; however, I do have an amazing description of seeing their dogs and putting up a fight against them. There was also the paw print trail leading through the bushes into my yard from them all the way up to my porch where the event took place. I will obviously be pressing charges and fighting them to cover the cost of what has happened. But that will obviously take some time. In the meantime, my baby girl needs treatment so she does not have to be put down.

Every dollar helps and every share helps spread the message.

Today, this beautiful 10-month-old sweetheart was faced with death along with her 2-month-old sister. If you would like to share your support in Josephine’s recovery, please feel free to do so via the GoFundMe or by calling the Bucksport Veterinary Services and asking to put money towards Josie’s treatment.
