Three people were seriously injured Sunday when an SUV veered into the opposite lane of Schuylkill Avenue in Glenside before dawn and collided with a car, Reading police said.
The crash happened about 5:15 a.m. between the Schuylkill Avenue intersections with Avenue B and Lehigh Street.
City firefighters needed to use hydraulic tools to free the three occupants of the car. They were taken by ambulance to Reading Hospital with significant injuries.
The crash remains under investigation. Police gave this preliminary account in the crash report:
The driver of the SUV, was northbound on Route 183, which is Schuylkill Ave when he lost control of the SUV and it went into the southbound lane.
A witness said the SUV was traveling so fast in the 25 mph zone that it became airborne as it crested the hill in the 1200 block. The witness said the SUV went into the opposite lane, flipped onto its side before flipping again and collided with the car where Josias Daniel Feliz was a passenger, then a utility pole.
Police also spoke to the driver of the car, despite his injuries. He said he was southbound when he saw the SUV coming into his lane. He said he served twice to try to avoid a collision and blacked out when the collision occurred.
Police were unable to speak to the other two passengers, Josias Daniel Feliz, 24, of Reading and Darius P., 23, of Reading, due to the severity of their injuries.
Please help my nephew Josias Daniel Feliz recover. He and his coworker/friends were commuting home at the end of their working shift when the SUV driver collided with their vehicle. Josias is in critical condition. He has undergone arm and leg surgery and will be having wrist surgery as well, his lungs suffered great damage as a result of the collision. He is currently intubated and doctors believe that he might have a DAI (Brain Injury). It will take him many months/years to recover. Any assistance that would aid Josias D along his journey to recovery would be most appreciated and valued.
