On Monday, August 11th, 2025 Josh was not feeling well. Sue took him into the clinic to be evaluated by a doctor. He was told he was dehydrated and was sent home and instructed to drink Gatorade. By Thursday, Josh was feeling pretty ill. Sue took him to the St. Cloud ER. He was admitted for observation due to sepsis and ketoacidosis. By Friday, it was discovered he had 5 pockets of infection in his stomach. What was supposed to be a quick procedure to clean out the infections ended up being a 4 hour open surgery. At the time of surgery, adenocarcinoma (cancer) was discovered in his rectum.
On September 6th, Josh experienced a syncope (fainting) episode. The subsequent brain scan, thankfully, showed no cancer there. It did show some old infarctions that will be explored in the future.
Josh will need extensive rehabilitation. He has been bed ridden since August 14th and needs to regain his strength. He was moved to inpatient rehab at the STC Hospital on September 9th. He will need to continue maintaining his electrolytes, balancing his blood sugars, as well as ridding his body of excess fluids. He is currently retaining a good amount of fluid in his legs.
There is not a long-term plan yet. It is hard to know how long it will take to heal from what he’s been through so far, and he has yet to begin treatment for his cancer. Once he is stable and strong enough, oncology will be ordering a PET scan. Josh and his family continue to move forward, even though it’s like driving through fog right now. They are fighting hard to start the path for healing, one small step at a time. For the time being, he is unable to work with no return date discussed. He has been off of work since August 14, 2025. Every dollar given will help alleviate any medical expense burden on the family. It is greatly appreciated. May we also please lift Josh and the family up in prayer. A wise man once told me, “Many hands make light work.”
If you prefer not to use GoFundMe, Sue would graciously accept cash/check donations directly. Message Christina Gustafson regarding where to send.
