Hello, my name is Joseph Dutra. I have been a resident of Los Angeles for over 30 years, and I love this city.

Since March 2006, I have lived in a rent-controlled studio apartment, always paying my rent on time and being a considerate neighbor.

Unfortunately, my life took a drastic turn in early March 2024 when I received the devastating news that my mom was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. This news shifted my focus from my job search to my mom's needs. The emotional toll has been immense, affecting my ability to function and sleep. I strive daily to remain productive and positive, but it has been incredibly challenging.

Just a week after my mom's diagnosis, my best friend of over 30 years passed away suddenly due to alcoholism. I was shattered but kept the news to myself for a week to ensure my family remained focused on my mom’s health.

These two tragedies have profoundly impacted my mental health, leading to increased depression and anxiety. Consequently, my job search has suffered, and I have fallen behind on my rent and bills. I am determined to seek therapy once I secure full-time employment with benefits to address these issues more effectively.

I am asking for your help to stabilize my situation so I can fully support my mom’s recovery. Thankfully, my parents have excellent medical insurance, but I am currently behind on my rent. I owe $4,864.03 for four months of past-due rent, including late fees. Your donations will go directly towards resolving this balance and covering a few other essential bills. I have already made payment arrangements with LADWP and Verizon Wireless, and I have switched to a low-cost internet plan with Spectrum. Additionally, I have one credit card balance that I will manage on my own.

I am seeking $6,000.00 to cover my rent and attorney fees. I attached a copy of the rent balance & will also post a copy of the receipt once paid in full. Your support will not fund luxury expenses; it will help me regain stability and focus on my mom’s health.

Once I am back on my feet and employed full-time, I plan to give back to my community through volunteer work.
