One Saturday morning in October, Magdalena and Jose Luis, who have lived in Vancouver for more than 20 years, were drinking coffee in their home. On a quick trip to the curb to take out the trash bins, they were kidnapped by ICE. The agents had been waiting in their neighborhood for someone else, but took the couple regardless. Their young children were still inside, alone, and Magdalena and Jose Luis begged the agents to let them call someone to check on their daughters. Finally, ICE let Magdalena return home, but took Jose Luis to the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma. He was transferred to the Eloy Detention Center in Arizona, where he has been for five months. The family has been suffering without their partner and father, an incredibly hard-working construction worker and primary breadwinner; in addition, he was working around their apartment complex for a decrease in rent, but the landlord has recently taken away the discount. Magdalena has often had to work two jobs over the past months, and has struggled to afford Jose Luis' lawyer, pay rent, stay on top of car maintenance, and support their children. Recently, they got the news that Jose Luis' application for habeas corpus was approved, and that his bond has been set for $24,000 - and while the family is thrilled at the possibility of being reunited with him after paying, this is an overwhelming amount.
