Help Jose Luis Overcome Stage 4 Oesophageal Cancer

Our world turned upside down when our father, Jose Luis Oduber, was diagnosed with stage 4 oesophageal cancer a month and a half ago.

Our father has dedicated his life to helping others: for those of you who know him, you have certainly been exposed to his love for the medical profession – over 40 years of service as a traumatologist -, his kind heart and his great sense of humour. Every conversation has space for a laugh or a smile with him.

Beyond his clinical expertise, he has been an invaluable mentor, not just to his students but also to his colleagues and peers. His guidance and wisdom have extended beyond the confines of Caracas, reaching across the country.

I want to tell you a little about my dad, the bravest and kindest person I've ever known. At 71, he's not just my dad, but a hero who's spent his life fixing bones as an orthopaedic surgeon. He's the smartest person in any room, but you'd never hear that from him only his dad’s joke. His humility is as deep as his intelligence. He's always been strict, teaching me right from wrong, but his kindness shines through everything he does. His heart is as big as his brain, always thinking logically and methodically about how to help people that’s my dad.

I was looking forward to planning his visit to Ireland to spend time together and for him to meet my youngest son, when he received his diagnosis. All traveling planning was paused and my sister, brother and I started looking at what we could do to facilitate the treatment.

Unfortunately, the waiting time and uncertainty of treatment in the public health system in Venezuela are not compatible with what our father needs. Our only viable option is to start the treatment at a private healthcare facility/clinic which comes with higher costs.

The medical treatments – which include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and potential surgery – aren't fully covered by insurance, and the costs are daunting.

We are turning to the GoFundMe community for help. Your contribution, no matter the size, will not only help with the bills but will also show our dad that he is not alone in this fight against cancer.

Nuestro mundo se puso patas arriba cuando a nuestro padre, José Luis Oduber, le diagnosticaron cáncer de esófago en fase 4 hace un mes y medio.

Nuestro padre ha dedicado su vida a ayudar a los demás: aquellos que lo conocen, sin duda han estado expuestos a su amor por la profesión médica – más de 40 años de servicio como traumatólogo-, su buen corazón y su gran sentido del humor. Cada conversación tiene espacio para reírse o sonreír con él.

Más allá de su experiencia clínica, ha sido un mentor invaluable, no sólo para sus estudiantes sino también para sus colegas y pares. Su guía y sabiduría se han extendido más allá de los confines de Caracas, llegando a todo el país.

Quiero contarles un poco sobre mi papá, la persona más valiente y amable que he conocido. A sus 71 años, no es sólo mi padre, sino un héroe que pasó su vida arreglando huesos como cirujano ortopédico. Es la persona más inteligente en cualquier habitación, pero nunca escucharas eso de él, solo sus chistes de papá. Su humildad es tan profunda como su inteligencia. Siempre ha sido estricto, enseñándome el bien y el mal, pero su amabilidad brilla en todo lo que hace. Su corazón es tan grande como su cerebro, siempre piensa de manera lógica y metódica en cómo ayudar a las personas, ese es mi papá.

Tenía muchas ganas de planificar su visita a Irlanda para pasar tiempo juntos y que conociera a mi hijo menor cuando recibimos su diagnóstico. Paramos toda la planificación del viaje y mi hermana, mi hermano y yo comenzamos a buscar qué podíamos hacer para facilitar el tratamiento.

Lamentablemente el tiempo de espera y la incertidumbre del tratamiento en el sistema de salud pública en Venezuela no son compatibles con lo que nuestro padre necesita. Nuestra única opción viable es comenzar el tratamiento en un centro/clínica de atención médica privada, lo que conlleva costos más altos.

Los tratamientos médicos (que incluyen quimioterapia, radioterapia y posible cirugía) no están totalmente cubiertos por el seguro y los costos son enormes.
