Jose Luis came to Los Angeles from El Salvador over 30 years ago in search of a better life and the opportunity to support his family back home. For decades, he has worked tirelessly as a jornalero—a day laborer—taking on whatever jobs he could find, from small gigs to longer-term work, always showing up with dedication and resilience.
Like many, Jose Luis faced profound loss during the pandemic. He lost his daughter to COVID-19, a tragedy that continues to weigh heavily on him.
In October 2025, while on his way to work, Jose Luis was detained by ICE. He was not given the chance to answer questions or advocate for himself. During his detention, he experienced physical harm and was held for five months in Adelanto.
While detained, Jose Luis was given an insulin brand for his diabetes that he had never used before. This resulted in him becoming severely ill. He suffered intense headaches, disorientation, and physical weakness. At one point, his injuries left him unable to walk for an entire month. Along with witnessing the horrible treatment of his peers, these experiences have left lasting physical and emotional scars, including ongoing nightmares.
After his release, Jose Luis returned to find that he had lost his home. He is now trying to recover and rebuild from the ground up, facing uncertainty while still coping with the trauma of detention.
We are raising funds to support Jose Luis as he gets back on his feet. Your contributions will help provide immediate stability—covering basic needs, medical care, and working toward securing permanent housing.
Any amount you can give makes a difference. If you’re unable to donate, sharing this campaign is another powerful way to support Jose Luis.
Thank you for standing with him during this critical time.
