On 01/30 our mother’s rock, my stepdad Jose Luis, underwent emergency surgery for an intra-medullar spine tumor. While the surgery was necessary to save his life, the outcome has been life-altering. He is now paralyzed from the hip down and faces a reality where he will no longer be able to return to the work he loves.

The timing of this is especially devastating. My mother, who is the heart of our home, is also currently unemployed due to a previous work injury. With the primary breadwinner now unable to work and my mother still in her own recovery, our family has gone from a hardworking household to one with zero income in the blink of an eye.
