A Future Cut Short: Help Jonathan Save His Family Home

My name is Jonathan Lázaro. I am 20 years old and a recently graduated Licensed Practical Nurse from Guatemala. I have spent my life preparing to care for others, but today, I am the one fighting for my life and my family’s future.

On February 26th, while heading to finalize the paperwork for my new job, tragedy struck. Since public transportation is difficult and expensive in my area, I relied on my modest, everyday motorcycle to get to work—my essential tool for daily life. That day, in the blink of an eye, I lost control and skidded. The next thing I remember is being on the pavement, trapped under a bus that shattered my legs and pelvis.

After three weeks in a public hospital, a critical lack of resources led to a severe infection. To save my life from sepsis, my family made the desperate choice to move me to a private facility. Upon arrival, the neglect of my injuries was clear. To ensure my survival, on Saturday, March 21st, surgeons had to proceed with the amputation of my right leg. I am currently recovering with the wound still open—a painful and delicate process to ensure the infection is fully cleared before permanently closing the stump.

My parents have given everything, even though they should be at an age of rest. My father, 67, continues to work tirelessly, and my mother, has made a lot of sacrifices to cover the initial costs. The current hospital bill already exceeds what our family can afford, and the total medical estimate to save my left leg and stabilize me is an amount we could not cover even by selling our family home. My parents are willing to leave themselves homeless for me, but even that sacrifice would not be enough for the surgeries and months of care ahead.

We are deeply grateful for any support and remain hopeful for Jonathan's recovery and his family's future. Your kindness and generosity will help Jonathan receive the care he needs and give his family hope during this incredibly difficult time.
