Hi, I am Jon's mom. Jon is a 9-year Army veteran who injured his knee in service. In 2020, Jon suffered a devastating stroke at the age of 48. At the time of the initial aortic tear, an ambulance was called, and they refused transport to the hospital. The EMT said he probably had the flu, despite severe headache, vomiting, arm numbness, vision loss, and NO FEVER. Sadly, my beloved sister was dying from brain cancer at the time. She died several days later on Jon's 48th birthday, and 30 hours later, Jon was life-flighted to Grady Hospital where he underwent surgery. I was told by the doctor that if they had transported him the night he called 911, he would have zero to minimal damage. Unfortunately, he suffered severe left-side brain injury causing right-side paralysis, hearing loss, and Broca's aphasia. Jon was unable to be rehabilitated due to bone-on-bone knee injury. COVID hit. No help forthcoming. When they finally came out, they peppered him with questions while I continued to tell them he couldn't speak. They sent a letter saying he was too sick to receive help. One year in, a local church donated a handicap ramp, and we were finally able to get him into therapy. My husband and I have worked tirelessly, taking turns sleeping downstairs with him in a recliner. We are in our seventies, and Jon is 6'1". He can't get upstairs and hasn't had a shower or bath in over 5 years. Jon tirelessly does his exercises to maintain the progress we have made. But we are exhausted, mentally and physically. We have made the painful and scary decision to move 2 1/2 hours away to be close to Jon's sister, our daughter Jennifer, and her husband. Money doesn't go near as far in her area, and every home we can afford will need more extensive adaptations and accommodations to make it safe and comfortable for Jon, his support dog, and us. Also, moving costs, as we have gotten "aged out" of physically moving ourselves. Please consider donating to help Jon get his own room and a shower for the first time in almost 6 years.
