My husband Mike received shocking news back in May after going in for lab work that led to an ultrasound. The results showed a 9cm mass on his right kidney. The phone call informing us of this discovery left us in total shock and disbelief. Further tests, including a CT scan, revealed suspicious nodules in his lungs, leading to more scans and ultimately a PET scan.

Regrettably, the PET scan indicated that the cancer had metastasized to his lungs, signifying stage 4 kidney cancer. This revelation was a heavy blow, particularly given Mike's history of robust health and activity. My mind is still not able to fully comprehend this.

Mike and I have been married for 39 years, and those of you who have the privilege of knowing Mike can attest that he’s just the best guy hands down. He is my hero and my very best friend! Always positive and upbeat, friendly to everyone he meets & he loves talking to strangers (especially about college football.) He never says a bad word about anybody. He finds the good in everyone and everything. He is always looking for opportunities to help people. He’s the ultimate encourager and has such a servant’s heart. Mike has been a video editor at CBN for 35 years. He’s edited everything from commercials to feature stories, to long format programs. He currently works in the international department which he absolutely loves! He’s an extremely hard worker who always goes the extra mile and he’s loved by all his co-workers. Mike is what our family calls our “go to guy.” He can solve any problem, fix just about anything and somehow finds a way to make everything alright when life gets hard. I can’t say enough about his example as a husband, father and grandfather! His dedication to his family is unmatched, and his sacrifices are immeasurable! I can honestly say the world is a better place because of Mike Carter!

We are still processing this diagnosis and recently met with an oncologist. We are seeking a second opinion and have decided to go to MD Anderson in Houston, Texas, known as the top cancer center in the country. We refuse to give in or give up; we are warriors and are holding onto hope for a miracle. It's a heartbreaking situation, but with God’s help we are determined to face it head-on.

Many people have asked that I start a Go Fund Me page because they want to help. This is very difficult for me as I am not comfortable asking for money or depending on other people. With a humble heart I am requesting donations through Go Fund Me to help us cover complex medical expenses, bills, and treatments that lie ahead on this journey. So far Mike has had 2 ultrasounds, 2 CT scans, 1 PET scan and is in need of a bone scan. The thought of the total cost is overwhelming, but my focus remains on supporting Mike rather than worrying about finances. I am not sure how much everything will cost in the end, so I am hesitant to set a specific fundraising goal. However we have been told to expect to be at MD Anderson for a week for consultations and further medical testing. We are expecting a phone call within the next few days to set the appointment date.

This situation has Mike breaking down and crying at times because of his fears of missing out on future experiences & it truly hurts my heart. Our family has a new grandson on the way in October, and we are over the moon excited! We already have two grandchildren that bring us so much joy! Being a grandparent is a tremendous blessing.

I urge each and every one of you to cherish every moment and never take anything or anyone for granted. Embrace life, stay present, maintain a positive outlook, and cultivate self-awareness. The outpouring of love and support we have received has been truly overwhelming and has deeply touched us. Every time I share your messages with Mike, he is moved to tears.
