Johnnie dedicated his life to serving his country and this community and now he needs our support. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps before serving as a Portsmouth Police Officer for 20 years. Upon his retirement from PPD, Johnnie joined the Army National Guard for another 5 years including a 14 month deployment to Iraq. It was there in Iraq that Johnnie suffered his first heart attack. Since then Johnnie has continued to struggle with his cardiac health, suffering several heart attacks resulting in stents, a triple bypass and chronic lung issues.

After being sick for much of this past year with multiple bouts of pneumonia and bronchitis. Johnnie was admitted to the hospital where they performed a PET scan. A growth was found on the left lower lobe of his lung. After the biopsy came back, Johnnie has been diagnosed with Stage III Invasive Mucinous Adenocarcinoma. Johnnie was admitted for surgery where they removed an 8cm tumor and had a left lower lobectomy. He is home recovering from this surgery.

His oncologist through Dana Farber is concerned that his cancer could have spread at levels not yet evident on scans and are recommending an aggressive treatment. Johnnie is now facing 18 months of chemotherapy and immunotherapy starting with a port being placed this week. This is an incredibly long and certainly grueling road for Johnnie and his family. As you can imagine, Johnnie is unable to do much and will continue to need help with everyday needs.
