On March 2nd, John Reitz suffered a massive stroke while home on his lunch break. He was rushed to Penn State Holy Spirit Hospital and received life saving brain surgery. Thankfully, John seems to be recovering; however, he has a long road ahead of him. He will likely remain in the hospital for the remainder of March and then will be transferred to an In Patient rehabilitation facility before returning home.
While this is all promising news, John did not have health insurance at the time of his stroke. He was able to secure a policy that will begin on April 1; however, he and his wife JoAnne are facing a medical bill that is estimated to be over $300,000.
Many of you who know John and JoAnne know that they are no strangers to medical and financial hardship. After fighting a long battle with uterine cancer several years ago, JoAnne remains disabled due to complications from her treatments. JoAnne and John have already lost their home and are still paying on JoAnne's medical bills from her cancer treatment. While JoAnne does work from home earning a modest income, John--a catering and event director--was unemployed for most of 2020 due to the shutdowns as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
JoAnne has looked into multiple options to help reduce the medical bill. Sadly, her income places them just over the limit to qualify for charity care through the hospital.
Anyone who knows John knows he is the first person to jump in and help someone in need. He is one of the kindest people I have ever met; and as his employer and friend, I have to do something to help. With JoAnne's permission, I created this fundraiser in hopes that we can lighten their financial burden.
All funds raised through this page will be dedicated to paying for John's medical bills for his surgery and treatment following his stroke. The amount seems enormous, but my hope is that if all who John touched can give a little, we can collectively prevent him and JoAnne from financial ruin and allow them both to focus on what is truly the only important thing: John's recovery.
