Update: Thanks for supporting my fundraising efforts. Here is a new article with information supporting IndyStar's initial reporting on my case Please like and share so that we can get the word out!
After spending 18 long years behind bars for the crime of bank robbery he did not commit and about which he has steadfastly denied involvement, John Turner’s conviction has been set aside. The setting aside of the judgment came on January 6, 2026, after the Marion County Superior Court was presented with powerful evidence — the newly discovered identity of the real perpetrator. This discovery emerged after The Indianapolis Star's reporter Kristine Phillips authored an article about John's case which was published in July 2025. This article led to a tip identifying the real robber and to an out-of-county detective with long-standing familiarity with this robber to immediately identify him, and no other, as the person who committed the robbery. A second article detailing the events leading to John’s vindication will be linked to this page once published.
While John is exploring legal remedies based upon prosecutorial and police misconduct resulting in the loss of 216 months — nearly half of his adult life — as a free man, he is in urgent need of support to get him back on his feet. John has lost irreplaceable moments with family, missed career opportunities, and endured unimaginable emotional and psychological hardship. Reentering society after almost two decades of wrongful incarceration comes with overwhelming challenges: no savings, limited job prospects, lack of stable housing, healthcare, and basic necessities.
This GoFundMe is to help John rebuild his life from the ground up. Funds raised will go toward housing, transportation, clothing, medical and mental health care, legal expenses, and education and job training; everything needed to start fresh after so many years of his life were unjustly taken from him.
Your support whether through a donation or by sharing this page will help provide dignity, stability, and hope for a future that has been long denied.
Thank you for standing with John as he begins this new chapter, a dream deferred, of freedom and healing.
Special Message from John:
Hello everyone! First and foremost, I want to praise God for delivering me from a terrible living nightmare that I was forced to endure for 18 years. I absolutely wish no element of injustice of any kind upon another human soul.
I also want to thank my wonderful legal team consisting of former Marion County Chief Prosecutor Mr. Scott C. Newman alongside his Deputy Prosecutor Ms. Toby Gill. Their genuine belief in my innocence and in me as a person meant the world to me when I was at a very dark place and space in my life. It would be a total remiss if I failed to mention that it was God's infinite light, mercy, and majesty which led to our meeting and to our progressive fight for justice.
Finally, I thank the Local and National public. Words cannot fully express my gratitude and appreciation for your kindness and generosity. As I transition back into free society, your support will make the journey a lot less difficult, and I could never accomplish doing so without you all feeling the need to help me. So, if you will, please donate whatever you can to help my fund-raising campaign so we can all succeed. Together we must stand and continue showing awareness in the fight towards advocating for criminal justice. (God bless our world and our Country). Certainly, my gratitude is from the deepest depth of my heart.
