Dear Friends, Family, and Kind Supporters,
My name is Kevin Knispel, and I am reaching out on behalf of my father, John Knispel, who recently suffered a life-altering injury. Our family is facing significant medical and rehabilitation expenses, and we are humbly asking for your help during this difficult time.
My father, John, is 61 years old—a devoted father of two (my sister Molly and me) and a proud grandfather to two young boys. He raised my sister and me as a single parent after our mother, Donna, passed away in 2012 following a long battle with MS. A dedicated and hardworking man, he also served our country in the United States Army Reserve.
On January 9, 2025, our family went sledding together, enjoying what was meant to be a fun winter day. But in a split second, everything changed. My son, Gabriel, lost control of his sled, veering off the trail toward a tree. Without hesitation, my father reacted instinctively—racing to intercept the sled to protect his grandson from harm. In the process, he was knocked down, his head snapping forward and then back into the snow. He collapsed on top of Gabriel and was unable to move.
I rushed to his side and kept him still until the ambulance arrived. He was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio, where we learned the devastating news—his C3 and C4 cervical vertebrae were crushed. The swelling was severe, and he was unable to move. Doctors immediately administered medication to reduce the swelling and muscle relaxers to stabilize him for surgery. After the operation, he was placed on a respirator and remains hospitalized to this day, unable to return home.
Right now, the full extent of his recovery is unknown, but we do know it will be a long, difficult journey. Rehabilitation from this kind of injury can take months or even years, and the medical costs are already mounting. Our family is doing everything we can, but we need help.
Any contribution, no matter the size, will go directly toward his medical care, rehabilitation, and ongoing expenses as he fights to regain his independence. If you are unable to donate, we would be incredibly grateful if you could share this message with others.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for taking the time to read my father’s story. Your support, prayers, and generosity mean the world to us.
With gratitude, Kevin Knispel
