Help John Hewett Adjust to Life Without Sight

Donation protected
Jess and I (Lauryn) are reaching out to share and ask for support for our dad, John Hewett. To know him is to love him.

Just a few days after the photo featured here was taken, he lost vision in his only good eye. He has now been blind for almost three weeks.

We recently received devastating news from a specialist: his sight is unlikely to return. We are holding onto hope that with continued medical investigation, there may still be a chance for him to regain some vision.

For years, our dad has battled an undiagnosed condition that has slowly taken away his independence. It started in 2020 when he began losing muscle in one of his calves, making it difficult to walk. Over time, he’s had to rely on a brace and a cane just to get around. Then, last year, he suffered sudden vision loss in one eye due to optic nerve failure. In January 2025, the same thing happened again—this time, to his remaining eye.

Thankfully, he retired last year and was able to travel while he still had his vision. But at just 65 years old, he has now lost all independence.

To make matters more challenging, our 88-year-old grandfather—who is in the early stages of heart failure—also lives with and depends on our parents. Our mom is now the sole provider and caretaker for the two men she loves most, all while facing several more years until retirement.

If you know our parents, you know their greatest strength has always been their ability to build and nurture a community. So now, we’re asking that community to rally around them.

All proceeds from this fundraiser will go toward:

  • Home modifications to make their space accessible for the blind
  • Training for a seeing eye dog
  • Healthcare costs
  • Respite care for our mom

In addition to this fundraiser, we’ve also set up a Meal Train to help lighten the load for our mom during this incredibly difficult time. Any support—whether through a donation, a meal, or simply sharing this with others—means the world to us.

Thank you for being part of their community and for helping us navigate this unimaginable journey while holding onto hope.

With love and gratitude,
Lauryn & Jessica Hewett
