*UPDATE* It is with great sadness that I am sharing that Dad, the wonderful Mr John, has passed away this morning. He was surrounded by his family and friends holding his hand and telling him that we loved him. If you knew John, you know he hated waiting around.
The funds raised have massively helped to cover the costs of keeping him comfortable the last few days and the subsequent arrangements that follow. John was very clear that he wanted to be buried in Essaouira so we are honouring his wishes and will be arranging a send off in Ireland in due course.
Thank you to everyone for your donations, kind words and support.
John's family is reaching out with heavy hearts to ask for your help.
John has suffered multiple brain haemorrhages from a fall here in Morocco, and is in intensive care in a private clinic and cannot be moved. His condition is extremely serious. The bleeding has caused significant damage and he is slipping into a coma. He has been unable to speak and has paralysis down one side of his body.
Due to the extent of the brain trauma and multiple bleeds, doctors have advised that neurosurgery is not currently possible. They will continue to monitor him closely and may operate if his condition deteriorates further, but right now everything is being managed day by day. Our focus is making sure he receives the immediate care he urgently needs.
John is being treated in a private clinic in Essaouira, as there was no alternative in an emergency. He does not have medical insurance, and the costs are overwhelming:
- Around £350 per night for his hospital stay (depending on treatment required)
- £360 per scan, and he has had 4 scans so far with more needed to monitor his progress
- £180 for tests
We want to raise enough for at least the next month of care, which we estimate at £15,000 to £20,000. This is not including the possible surgery.
As a family, we have been covering these costs ourselves, but we only have enough immediate funds for approximately one more week of treatment. After that, we will struggle to continue to pay for the care he urgently needs.
We are asking for any support you can give - no matter how small - to help us:
- Continue John's critical care
- Cover ongoing hospital and medical costs
- Give him dignity, comfort and the best possible chance during this incredibly difficult time
If you're unable to donate, sharing this page would mean so much to us.
Thank you for taking the time to read John's story and for any support you can offer.
Hannah and Chris
