Update on John: A New Hurdle, A New Hope

We wanted to share an important update on John’s cancer journey—and why your support means more now than ever.

Recently, John underwent an MRI that revealed four very small spots on his brain. The doctors aren’t yet sure what these spots mean because they’re so small, but this new development has temporarily halted his participation in a promising drug trial.

The plan moving forward is this:

John will receive a dose or two of chemotherapy,

Then undergo radiation to treat the four spots,

And if all goes well, he may still qualify to begin the clinical trial that could offer him a fighting chance.

In the meantime, John and his wife have made the decision to temporarily relocate to Houston, Texas, so he can be closer to a top-tier cancer center and continue pursuing specialized treatments. While they are both still working remotely, the financial burden of this move—on top of ongoing medical expenses—is immense.

If John Wind were writing this, he'd probably kick things off with a witty lung cancer joke to lighten the mood and make you smile. That’s just who he is—a man who can find laughter even in the toughest moments. But today, I want to tell you about the incredible person behind that humor and why your kindness could make all the difference.

John is a devoted dad to four sons who are starting families of their own, a proud grandpa to six (soon to be seven!) little ones, and a loving husband to his sweetheart of 30 years. If you’ve ever met John at church on a Sunday, you’ve likely been greeted with his warm smile, genuine interest in your life, and an offer to help however he could. That’s the kind of man John is—always giving, always caring.

In March 2024, the Wind family's world turned upside down when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. His only treatment option right now is grueling chemotherapy every three weeks. Despite this, John has continued working full-time to provide for his family. Working from home, he wraps himself in blankets on chemo days and pushes through the exhaustion. But last month, John exhausted his FMLA paid leave. Now, every hour he spends at chemo, follow-up appointments, or scans is deducted from his paycheck.

Recently, John received heartbreaking news: the cancer is spreading. He will likely need to pursue specialized treatment options—options that come with even greater financial strain.
