Richard Pereira and his wife, Johana Pineda, came to the United States from Venezuela in search of a better future. They worked hard for years to build a safe and stable life for their 7-year-old son, Richard (“Richi”) Pereira Pineda.
During what they believed would be a routine immigration check-in, they were told they needed to sign voluntary departure paperwork and were led to believe they would have two months to prepare before leaving the country. Instead, just days later, they were unexpectedly detained and placed on a repatriation flight to Venezuela with their son.
On the very day they arrived, while staying in temporary accommodations for repatriated families near Maiquetía, two powerful earthquakes struck the region.
Tragically, Richard lost his life.
Richard was a loving husband, a devoted father, and a hardworking man whose greatest priority was providing for his family.
Johana and Richi survived, but in less than a week, they lost everything. A little boy who had been attending summer school and enjoying a normal childhood in the United States was suddenly forced to leave the only home he truly knew, survive a devastating earthquake, and say goodbye to his father forever.
Today, Johana and Richi need help covering Richard’s funeral and transportation expenses, medical bills, housing, food, school supplies, counseling, and other essential living expenses as they begin the difficult journey of rebuilding their lives.
My name is Luisa Quintero Pineda, and I am Johana’s niece. I lived with them in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and I am organizing this fundraiser on their behalf while supporting them from the United States and helping manage their belongings.

Español // Ayudemos a Johana y a Richi a reconstruir sus vidas Richard Pereira y su esposa, Johana Pineda, emigraron de Venezuela a Estados Unidos con la esperanza de construir un mejor futuro. Durante años trabajaron incansablemente para brindar una vida segura y estable a su hijo de 7 años, Richard (“Richi”) Pereira Pineda. Durante lo que creían sería un chequeo rutinario con inmigración, les informaron que debían firmar una salida voluntaria y les hicieron creer que tendrían dos meses para preparar su regreso. Sin embargo, pocos días después fueron detenidos inesperadamente y enviados, junto a su hijo, en un vuelo de repatriación hacia Venezuela. El mismo día en que llegaron, mientras permanecían en un hospedaje temporal para familias repatriadas cerca de Maiquetía, dos fuertes terremotos sacudieron la región. Lamentablemente, Richard perdió la vida. Richard fue un esposo amoroso, un padre dedicado y un hombre trabajador cuya mayor prioridad siempre fue su familia. Johana y Richi sobrevivieron, pero en menos de una semana lo perdieron todo. Un niño que hasta hacía unos días asistía a su summer school y disfrutaba de una infancia normal en Estados Unidos tuvo que dejar el único hogar que realmente conocía, sobrevivir a un devastador terremoto y despedirse para siempre de su papá. Hoy, Johana y Richi necesitan ayuda para cubrir los gastos funerarios y de traslado de Richard, la atención médica, vivienda, alimentación, útiles escolares, apoyo psicológico y las necesidades básicas mientras comienzan el difícil proceso de reconstruir sus vidas. Mi nombre es Luisa Quintero Pineda y soy sobrina de Johana. Viví con ellos en Murfreesboro, Tennessee, y hoy organizo esta campaña en su nombre mientras los apoyo desde Estados Unidos.
