Hi everyone, my name is Nina and I'm writing on behalf of my coworker and friend, Joey. This fundraiser aims to provide some financial buffer for him and his family as they navigate finding new housing after losing their home in an electrical fire. HPD and Red Cross have been contacted, but it will be a while before they will be able to receive any meaningful assistance.
I've been working under Joey's guidance for almost a year now at our doggie daycare/nonprofit to provide vocational petcare training for autistic adults, and he truly has been proven to be the heart and soul of our workplace. Joey has trained all of our new staff members with consideration and compassion, been a supportive and learned teacher for our mentorship program, and achieved all of this while caring for his ailing mother at home.
If I had to emphasize one thing about Joey, it would be his selfless nature. Every time he goes on break, he asks if we need anything from the store, often bringing us back snacks and treats even when we insist that we're fine. He's always staying the latest for the last pickups, telling everyone else to go home and how much he just appreciates our hard work. He loves each and every one of the dogs at daycare like they're his own, always somehow remembering all of their quirks in perfect detail, even for dogs that used to come long before I was hired.
Through this ordeal, he has had to surrender his dog Sparky. Amidst this emotionally devastating loss, I would love nothing more than to provide resources to help foster a sense of security for him and his family as they move forward.
We are starting our fundraising goal at $5,000. Since the path forward is still unclear and depends on how fast housing can be secured, we can only provide estimates for the anticipated expenses- they are as follows:
- Housing their family of three for the next month- either in a hotel (~$150/night), Airbnb (~$4,000/mo), or a sublet (~$2,000)
- Security deposit (~$2,500) and first month's rent (~$2,000) at a new place
- Storage for what's remaining of their belongings (~$200/mo for 10'x10' unit)
- Replacing necessities damaged by the fire, food costs, and medical/transportation costs for Joey's mother ($???)
Thank you for reading, and please consider sharing to help a fellow dog lover, neurodiversity supporter, and all around great human being.
