Help Joey my Whippet Run Again
Hello, my name is Selina, and I'm raising funds for the ongoing medical care for my beloved whippet, Joey, whose journey to recovery has been long and challenging since a sudden accident in February this year. My greatest hope is to see Joey run again—free and joyful, just as every whippet should be.
As some of you may well know, Joey is my beautiful four-year-old companion—bright, intuitive, affectionate, and endlessly loyal. He’s been by my side through everything, and now it's my turn to be there for him. He loves running along the beach, chasing gulls and his ball, and has a little whippet sister, Wendy, who misses running beside him.
In February this year, Joey had an unforeseen accident, where he collapsed and was paralysed during a dog walk.
It was terrifying, and Joey was in shock. After extensive tests, the amazing Neurology department in Glasgow found it to either be a slipped disk that pressed onto his spinal nerve and caused paralysis, or a Fibrocartilaginous embolism - a rare spinal stroke.
Since then, its been a tireless and daily journey of physio, hydrotherapy and stretching. He started completely immobile, unable to sit or stand, incontinent, and quite sad.
Little by little, he learned to turn himself, sit up, then stand—and finally, to walk again. He still stumbles, slips and trips, but never gives up.
The photo below is Joey at the beach during his early recovery - we would go and he would just sit on me and watch the waves and smell the ocean. I was trying my best to uplift his mood in any way possible.
Where are we now?
Recently, however, we hit a set back, and his front left paw has started to deteriorate, and he is knuckling and dragging his paw more, causing injuries and infections. This is due to this paw not fully recovering from his injury in Feb.
Deep wounds, hair loss, swelling have been appearing on this same paw. Despite bed-rest, pain relief, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, the wounds and hair loss are still increasing and not currently showing signs of improvement. His blood work and swab tests came back as normal, so the next steps are an x-ray and biopsy to find the cause for treatment, which is costing £1085.
So far, I’ve covered over £4,500 in medical bills with the help of insurance and personal savings, but Joey’s policy has now reached its limit, and I’m out of options. I would never ask for help unless it was absolutely necessary.
I also need to invest in a custom anti-knuckling brace (£240), which will allow Joey to walk safely without injury or pain while he continues healing.
I want to give Joey his life back—to see him run along the beach again, happy and free. He’s so close.
As you know, whippets love to run, and the whippet/greyhound+ breed are the second fastest animal on the planet, and it's what they do. I need to see Joey enjoying his life again. And by sorting out his leg, as well as getting his leg brace, is one step towards this.
I feel quite embarrassed asking for help, but I feel it's the time now - we are so close to getting him recovered. I don't want to let him down by delaying his treatment, and as every dog owner will understand, dogs deserve the world and more.
Funds would be used for:
- X-ray and biopsy - £1085.
- Anti-knuckling brace - £240.
- Future treatment depending on diagnosis
- Physio sessions (£57.37 per session) are currently on hold until I save again.
Thank you for reading Joey’s story. Any support, no matter how small, would help him in his recovery. Thank you for any donations. Joey and myself are so appreciative of any help he receives.
With love,
Selina & Joey
