My name is Tecé Upham, and in 2022, my family's lives took an devastating and unexpected turn when my brother, Joel, was diagnosed with kidney failure. Joel's life was abruptly put on pause as he was forced to face this challenging journey, one that involves rigorous dialysis treatments and the constant uncertainty of what lay ahead. Despite these hurdles, Joel has remained resilient and focused on his positive mindset, and the uphill battle ahead of his kidney transplant surgery and RECOVERY. A testament to his unwavering spirit.

As we navigated through these trying times, a glimmer of hope emerged: we found a donor. This incredible act of generosity, by the most compassionate human, Amanda Fowler, has paved a way for the kidney transplant offering Joel a chance to reclaim his life, and see a future again. Of course, the path to recovery is fraught with its own set of challenges.

Joel's surgery date is on the horizon, yet the road to healing will be both physically and financially demanding. Post-surgery, Joel faces a recovery period of several months, during which time he will be unable to work. Adding to the complexity, his medical expenses, including essential medication costing $1,000.00 per month, are not covered by insurance. Despite receiving some support from government programs, the assistance falls significantly short of his needs. Furthermore, his healthcare team has recommended daily PSW visits, and a robust health plan including a gym program, and mental health support, to ensure a successful recovery and acceptance of the transplant. All adding to the costly monthly requirements.

At 35, Joel deserves to focus on his health and the incredible journey of accepting his new kidney without the added stress of financial burdens, I'm sure as we all would wish for ourselves. It is our hope to raise funds to support Joel through this critical period of saving his life, by covering his medical expenses, living costs, and ensuring he has access to the best possible care post surgery.
