The What
Hey All! As many of you probably know, my position as Director of Education at ex’treme Institute is no longer. It is bittersweet and certainly a huge change in my daily life because I put so much of my heart and soul into that school for the past 5 years. However, I have certainly learned in life that nothing lasts forever and embracing change with optimism, whether abrupt or preconceived, has allowed me to see this as a great opportunity and not a set back…perhaps one of the greatest opportunities because I am packing up and making a move over to Thailand!
The Why
You are probably wondering why so far, Joel?! Well let me explain a bit: Over the past few years, I have been traveling frequently, learning new areas and absorbing new cultures, taking in the sights, sounds, tastes, smells and spirit of new parts in our diverse world. Traveling abroad has really left an impression on me. It really helped me reassess my values and goals in ways that I least expected. Being a part of a new culture, even for just brief periods of time, left me with a feeling that I really needed to see and experience more to grow into the best version of myself that I possibly could. Each time I came back home, I would see and experience things a bit differently, and after several life changing travel experiences, my passion to take this quest seriously was born. The music I was composing took on more depth and meaning than ever before. The relationships I was building were more organic and impactful than ever before. I also found great healing while dealing with a loss in my life. The challenge then became “how can I fit more time in my life for experiencing the world while being rooted in my job directing the college?” Well, fast forward several months later and something more powerful than me pushed me out of my life situation and into this position I am in right now...a position teaching music abroad!
So now you must be wondering why would someone with a new job be starting a Go Fund Me, right? Well, allow me to be real with you for a moment: Though I am fortunate enough to have a couple of great music projects that will get me through the next month or so in my current location, I am currently unemployed and will be for the majority of the summer. I do not start work in Thailand until the 2nd week in August. I will not receive pay until September. I will have to pay to relocate and pay to live in Thailand for about 7 weeks prior to receiving my first paycheck.
What's In It For You?
Any donation you can make is so greatly appreciated and will help me get to my new destination in Chiang Mai, Thailand with minimal impossibilities. I WILL practice reciprocity and work my hardest to give you something in return. Here is what you can expect in return:
1) Music, music and more music! Thailand marks the 1st of many destinations for me over the next several years. I will be spending time interviewing locals, absorbing the musical traditions, and documenting my experiences in the form of some very cool music projects. You will get access to all of this!
2) You will have a free place to stay in whatever country I will be living in as long as my family doesn’t already have the time scheduled...they get dibs haha!
3) The great feeling of contributing to passion-driven and creative-driven projects. This entire mission for me is out of an unending desire to live and experience the world the best way that a human possibly can while absorbing what is around me, to put back into the world, in a positive and creative way. We live once and supporting people taking leaps to grow and express art through the process is a great thing.
I appreciate you all taking the time to read my story and I hope you can find it in your hearts to help me adjust to this new life situation as painless as possible. It would truly mean the “world” to me!
