HELP JOE WITH HIS JOURNEY TO RECOVERY

On Saturday afternoon July 30th our nephew Joe Merrick was struck by a car while riding his motorcycle to a family birthday party. Thankfully, a nurse on her way to work happened upon the accident and was able to stop the bleeding with a tourniquet, providing just enough life-saving care to get Joe in a medical helicopter to Lahey Hospital, where they sent him immediately into emergency surgery.

Unfortunately, there was no saving Joe’s foot, and doctors had to amputate a portion of his lower leg just below the left knee. In addition to the amputation, he suffered multiple fractures in his neck vertebrae.

A month later, his wound remains open, and we are eager for a successful skin graft procedure in the future as the muscle heals. Joe’s rehabilitation at Spaulding Rehab will be intense, he will be working very hard both physically and mentally to overcome his injuries.

All of us are encouraged by Joey’s resilience. The doctors are incredibly impressed with his mentality to overcome the challenges ahead. That said, he can use a helping hand.

He and his family will be facing financial challenges as a result of the care he needs now and in the future. There are extraordinary costs involved in getting procedures, therapies, and countless visits for medical and prosthetic appointments.
