I've been reporting about cybersecurity policy since 2014. I figure it's about time for me to learn what I'm talking about.
Hi. I'm Joe Uchill. You may know me from my time at Axios founding and running the Codebook cybersecurity newsletter, my soon-to-be-former job at SC Media covering policy and crime, or my Twitter account that's mostly puns about cartoons.
Here is a photo I took after a large retailer sent me a Hawaiian shirt by mistake.
As of September 1, I'll be packing up my Maryland apartment and moving to Los Angeles to start a two-year full-time master's program at the Pardee RAND Graduate School. It's a statistical analysis-focused program on foreign policy that allows for a lot of direct work with RAND Corporation subject experts.
RAND is graciously covering tuition through a scholarship and work-study, but I'm still going to need to pay for things like groceries. I'm asking for your help to figure that part out.
If you had a few bucks to help me out, I’d sure appreciate it.
FAQ (fair to ask questions)
What kind of return do I get on my investment?
Based on my interests and the focus of the program, you are investing in creating one more person well trained in treating information security as a data-driven policy problem.
Are you leaving journalism?
Maybe. It’s a two-year program. I still believe that journalism is important, but there are a lot of problems you can’t solve using journalism. I’d sort of like to get involved with some of them.
That said, if anyone needs a weekly cybersecurity newsletter writer, or a contract podcaster or some such, let me know.
Are there, like, rewards for donating?
For every $1000, I will tell one secret on Twitter. (My own secrets.)
Will we ever see you again?
I probably won’t be at conferences as much as I used to for the near future, but I’ll be around.
