My name is Angela Vinson and I am raising funds for our friend, frontline worker and 10 year U S Army veteran Joe Fetty. Joe contracted a very near fatal case of the coronavirus (covid-19). He tested positive on December 15, 2020. He was sent home with the usual treatment and followed instructions explicitly knowing the toll it had taken and was taking on so many of the patients and families that he serves. Joe fought this hideous virus at home for 10 days with high fever and respiratory issues all while doing as the doctors said to do.
In the early hours of Christmas morning 2020 Joe had to be taken to the emergency room. On arrival he was found to be in respiratory distress and was taken straight back and the staff went to work immediately. Joe was hospitalized at St Francis Emory Healthcare in Columbus, GA. He was admitted to ICU from the emergency room where he continued to fight the virus and pneumonia in both lungs. Seven days later New Year’s Day he took a turn for the worse and had to be placed on a ventilator and remained in critical condition and literally fighting for his life. It is because of the doctors, staff, and the many prayers from family and friends as well as people that did not know him from all over that God intervened. Joe was taken off the ventilator after eight harrowing days.
He remained in ICU for another five days and was transferred to a long-term acute care (LTAC) hospital nearby called Columbus Specialty Hospital. He was there with close monitoring for another 10 days. He had not been able to have any visitors from the very beginning due to the hospitals Covid precautions. Joe lost almost 50lbs and a lot of muscle mass. He was discharged home on January 23,2021 still on oxygen and very weak. He has continued to be on oxygen at home and has worked with home health physical and occupational therapies trying to build strength. He has been seen by his primary care provider as well as two different pulmonologists. Though he is has gained a little strength all the doctors have given him the same answer. It is unknown when he will or if he will completely recover because of scarring from the virus.
The unknowns of the virus won’t allow for predictions on recovery because there is so much that has yet to be discovered. The recovery time is extensive, and Joe will have to continue therapy and pulmonary rehabilitation. I am hoping to raise $15,000 to cover Joe’s medicines, expenses, utilities, car payment, and anything else that he needs in the near future. I'm hoping we can provide him with enough money to cover basics while he is recovering, so he can relax, know that we have his back.
Joe is 52 and has been a firefighter/paramedic for the city of Columbus, GA for almost 20 years. He has been a leader, a teacher, and a mentor to younger firefighters joining the department. He has also worked for several of the local county ems services; the most recent being Talbot County. He contracted the virus while doing what he loves. That is taking care of the people he serves.
All the built-up time has been exhausted with his employers. Joe is a hardworking man, son, father, and grandfather who never asks for help. This experience has been very difficult for him to come to grips with. He is used to paying his own way and helping others with no questions asked. I'm hoping we can provide him with enough money to cover basics while he is recovering, so he can relax and know we have his back.
