Hi everyone,

I’m setting this up on behalf of my friend and Westie breeder, Jody Applebaum of Appletree Westies — someone many of you know for her deep love and dedication to her dogs.

This past week, Jody’s beloved Westie Calvin — a sweet, gentle soul who has brought so much joy to her and to others — began having sudden, terrifying seizures out of nowhere. What started as one seizure quickly turned into multiple: first at home, then again just crossing the street, and later while simply resting after breakfast. Each time, Jody responded with urgency and care, getting him to the vet and following every recommendation.

Despite normal initial tests, Calvin’s seizures worsened. He’s now on phenobarbital and Keppra, and has undergone an MRI, spinal tap, and specialized bloodwork at a specialty emergency center. Thankfully, the MRI showed no signs of a definitive brain tumor, but many questions remain. His medication plan is now indefinite, and Jody is doing everything she can to give Calvin a fighting chance.

The cost of emergency care has already surpassed $5,000, and it’s still climbing.

Jody does not have pet insurance — the cost became prohibitive after years of caring for multiple dogs. On top of this, she was the victim of a devastating financial scam two years ago that wiped out her savings. She’s always been the kind of person to give generously, quietly help others, and show up with cookies or care when someone is in need. Now she’s the one who could use a hand.

To help raise funds, Jody is restarting a beloved tradition: baking Calvin’s Cookies, handmade peanut butter–pumpkin dog treats that were always a hit with her grooming clients. But the truth is, cookies alone won’t be enough to cover Calvin’s care — and that’s why I’m reaching out.
